Lesson 13: Yahoo Directory/Search Engine
Return to Library's Home Page Return to District's Home Page
Yahoo is both a subject directory as well as a search engine. Yahoo! Directory, like Google, was created by two Stanford graduate students. It was launched in 1994 as a subject directory and in 2002, it teamed with Google and became a combined subject directory/search engine. While the directory part of Yahoo has a cluttered look, the search page is much cleaner, and sparse--much like Google's main page.
The main directory page of Yahoo has a box for web searching at the top of the page and offers a wide variety of links.
The main search page in Yahoo searches the web using its own search technology, which is much like Google's technology. It supports the (+) and (-) signs, and uses double quotes for phrases. Yahoo also offers links to email, news, stock market, maps, images, and many other resources.
The advanced search page in Yahoo supports Boolean searching "all of these words," "exact phrase," "any of these words," and "none of these words." It supports field searching using drop-down menus. It allows the user to specify page update ranges, it allows for site searching with radio button, searching by file format and offers a customized filter option. The user can search by country and language, and it provides product web search options.
For my assignment with this lesson, I was required to go to the Yahoo! Directory page and select the subject heading Games from the list on the left-hand sidebar. I was then to look at the different game options available. I was to go in and play a game. I wasn't able to find "games" right away, but it was there after I clicked on Entertainment. I did play Pyramids, and must admit that it's quite addictive!
