Renaissance Certification Levels
One of the major ways we recognize achievement, as well as build stamina with AR at the elementary level is through certification recognition. Beginning in Kindergarten, students start achieving certifications through their AR reading. Certifications carry over from year to year, and the default is for each student to achieve each level (with the exception of Independent Reader, which can only be achieved one time) five times.
The certifications are awarded according to the following criteria: (In order for a book to count towards certification, the student must earn at least an 80 on the quiz)

The main benefit of having the certifications carry over from year to year, is that when a student enters their next grade level ,the teacher already knows what length of book that particular student has been successful with. For example, if a student is an Advanced Reader 5 by the end of third grade, his fourth grade teacher will know he's already been successful with a minimum of 15 one point books, and 15 two point books. He is ready to start trying longer chapter books. This way, once students are reading chapter books, they progress through longer books at a reasonable rate and their stamina levels grow by leaps and bounds.
What we've found in Pettus, is that most of our students who have been enrolled with us since Kindergarten, are basically full grown readers by the time they leave us and are ready for Junior High.
